Great feedback is a critical element of performance appraisal. As a matter of fact, feedback is one of the essential elements of communication – it is how people can communicate your impact on them.
Bill Gates said: “We all need people who will give us feedback. That’s how we improve.”
According to Mary Kay Ash, “There are two things people want more than sex and money… recognition and praise.”
This explains why I was really pleased to receive some great, unsolicited feedback this week, from someone I initially met on Facebook, who has now become a friend and soul-sister.
I don't seek validation, but when someone sends you something like this completely unsolicited – it humbles you - at least that’s the effect it had on me! It’s a BIG deal right, because at the end of the day, it is the quality of our relationships that help to nurture us and ultimately help us to become the very best that we can be!
Here’s the feedback:
So, do I believe I'm everyone's cup of tea? Of course, not - I'm no megalomaniac! 😅
I recognise that the only way to avoid criticism, is to do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing – which is not an option for me.
I take very seriously my self-assigned task of being my own cheerleader; I have got my own back, come what may! I always have, and I always will.
That being said, I FEEL LIKE SHE HAS GIFTED ME SOMETHING VERY PRECIOUS, JUST BY SHARING THIS WITH ME.
It not only humbles me, it also reminds me that someone somewhere is watching. Some person’s life is being impacted by your/my words, actions and inactions - OMG, It's such a huge responsibility! One that calls us to be deliberate, intentional and purposeful, in our thoughts, our words and our deeds.
I've always said that I want to be the reason why somebody decides to not give up, why they decide to give it one more go! What really gives me the greatest fulfilment and joy is the satisfaction of knowing my life is causing ripples in the world!
Allow me let you in, to a secret fear I have. Don't tell anyone, but my secret fear is the fear of dying unsung. I do not want to be forgotten after I'm gone, hence I am passionate about leaving my footprints in the sands of time. I want generations after me to be constantly reminded of the fact I was here, I lived, I loved, I gave it my best, and I did it my way! I should thank Beyoncé and Frank Sinatra for helping me out here as they have both echoed these sentiments, in some of their great songs.
I’m a great believer that my life is a tool and that it has profound effects in terms of how other people’s lives can be transformed when they come in contact with us”
“No matter how good you think you are as a leader, my goodness, the people around you will have all kinds of ideas for how you can get better. So, for me, the most fundamental thing about leadership is to have the humility to continue to get feedback and to try to get better – because your job is to try to help everybody else get better.” – Jim Yong Kim
If my life and my actions can inspire someone else in any way – perhaps to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then I would have achieved my reason for being. They may not realise it, but in sharing their (flattering) thoughts of me, this person has let me see a sneak-peek of my score-card, so I can answer the question I keep asking myself: HOW WELL AM I DOING?
I'm sending you Love, Light and Encouragement as you travel along your path, and can I urge you to find someone to encourage and inspire with your brilliance today.
And so, while I continue to strive for improvement (not perfection) I’m grateful to her, for the reminder of my awesome amazingness!
